The Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) has been recognized in the annual HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards, presented at the 2022 International Conference for High-Performance Computing, Networking, Storage, and Analysis (SC22), in Dallas. The list of winners was revealed at the SC22 HPCwire booth, as well as on the HPCwire website.
XSEDE was recognized with the following honor:
- Editors’ Choice: (XSEDE) Best Use of High-Performance Data Analytics & Artificial Intelligence: Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill used XSEDE-allocated Bridges-2 at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and Frontera at the Texas Advanced Computing Center – built by HPE and Dell respectively – to develop machine-learning-driven robotic production of MRI contrast agents. The algorithm offers a path toward improving MRI images unexpected by human experts.
The coveted annual HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards are determined through a nomination and voting process with the global HPCwire community, as well as selections from the HPCwire editors. The awards are an annual feature of the publication and constitute prestigious recognition from the HPC community. They are revealed each year to kick off the annual supercomputing conference, which showcases high-performance computing, networking, storage, and data analysis.
“The 2022 Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards are exceptional, indeed. Solutions developed with HPC led the world out of the pandemic, and we officially broke the exascale threshold – HPC has now reached a billion, billion operations per second!” said Tom Tabor, CEO of Tabor Communications, publishers of HPCwire. “Between our worldwide readership of HPC experts and the most renowned panel of editors in the industry, the Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards represent resounding recognition of HPC accomplishments throughout the world. Our sincerest gratitude and hearty congratulations go out to all of the winners.”
XSEDE is very happy to have collaborated on this project. Engaging in research on the leading edge often results in positive, unexpected results. AI is still new in this community. It’s wonderful serendipity to have been part of this exciting discovery.
John Towns, PI and Project Director, XSEDE

About XSEDE
The Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) was a powerful collection of integrated digital resources and services – things like supercomputers, visualization and storage systems, collections of data, software, networks, and expert support – that scientists, engineers, social scientists and humanities experts around the world used to advance understanding of our world and to make our lives healthier, safer and better. The five-year, $121 million project was supported by the National Science Foundation and led by NCSA. XSEDE concluded formal operations as a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project on August 31, 2022.The work of the XSEDE project is continued by the NSF’s ACCESS (Advanced Cyberinfrastructure Coordination Ecosystem: Services & Support) program.
